It's understandable to feel unsure about a first visit, especially if you've seen adjustment videos or don't know what treatment might involve. You can bring those questions with you. Here's how a visit with me works.

Before you arrive

Bring these if you have them:

Wear comfortable clothes you can move in.

Allow about 40 minutes for your first visit. Follow-up visits are about 20 minutes.

When you book online, Jane, my booking system, emails your intake form. You can complete it before you arrive, or come 10 to 15 minutes early to fill in a paper copy. I go through the consent form with you before treatment, and you sign it at the visit. I'll answer your questions first.

When you arrive

I see patients on Wednesdays at 13215 Victoria Rd N in Summerland. There is street parking out front on Victoria Road. Take a seat in the waiting room, and I'll meet you at your appointment time.

Step 1: You talk, I listen

We start with what brought you in and how it affects your life. Is pain interrupting your sleep, making work harder or keeping you from something you enjoy? I'll ask when it began, how it has changed and what you've already tried.

Your concerns and goals help guide the assessment.

Step 2: I assess your movement

I look at how you stand and move, check the relevant joints and muscles, and choose tests that fit your symptoms. These may include checks of movement, strength, sensation and reflexes.

I'll explain each step. If something feels uncomfortable or you want to pause, tell me so I can adapt the assessment.

Step 3: We go through what I found

Before treatment, I explain my findings, what they may mean and the options I recommend. We'll discuss the benefits, risks and alternatives, with time for your questions. You decide how to proceed.

If imaging or assessment by another provider would be appropriate, I'll explain why and discuss that next step with you.

Step 4: Treatment, with your consent

If treatment is appropriate and you're comfortable proceeding, we may begin at the first visit. Depending on your assessment and preferences, that could include adjustments or soft tissue work.

About the “cracking”

Some adjustments make a brief popping sound. If that worries you, please tell me. I'll explain the technique before we decide whether it's right for you.

I also use the Activator Method, a small handheld instrument. We can discuss suitable options, and I won't proceed without your consent.

Before you leave

We'll go over the next steps and any exercises recommended for you. I email your plan and exercise instructions after the visit so you have something clear to refer to at home.

If you're not ready for treatment

You can choose to have the conversation and assessment, then take time to consider your options. You can ask questions, decline a technique or pause at any point.

Common first-visit worries

Your care, at your pace

We talk, I assess and we discuss your options. You leave knowing what I found and what I suggest, and the choice stays with you.
